Looking on them in 2014, though, the flaws are more apparent, and the a couple of design decisions don't translate to the Vita all that well.

Ratchet & Clank Trilogy is the latest in a long, respectable line of Playstation stalwarts ported to and revamped for the PS Vita, joining God of War, Jak and Daxter, Metal Gear Solid, Flower, and a deep well of PSOne Classics. The steady trickle of old standards back to storefronts is a boon for players looking to revisit old favourites or explore games they missed the first time around (assuming they were even alive – kids born around the time the first Ratchet & Clank was released will be 12 now).

But this steady trickle, this great excavation of recent games history, serves another purpose. It lets us revisit these games with fresh eyes. We can shine a light on the old canon, see if it still holds up. In the case of Ratchet & Clank Trilogy, it's holding up pretty well. But the cracks are showing.

We can still say Ratchet & Clank’s foundations are strong, though. Its faithful adherence to the fundamentals of the modern 3D platformer and mechanics with their roots Super Mario 64 makes it feel similarly timeless, and the weapons system remains diverse and almost ahead of its time (even if Armed and Dangerous was only two years off). But its most interesting feature is still its level design.

Areal campaign pulled by Kickstarter after clearing funding goal Areal, the game pitched as "the definitive spiritual successor to the cult hit S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series" has been suspended from Kickstarter.

The crowdfunding effort was halted by Kickstarter with just two days remaining, and just after clearing its funding goal. No money will be taken from backers.

Kickstarter doesn't disclose why it suspends campaigns, but its terms of use outline a plethora of possible scenarios that can get a project pulled, including misrepresentation and self-pledging – both of which developer West Games has been accused of.

Magic 2015: Duels of the Planeswalkers review Magic 2015 is a step backwards for the Planeswalkers series, and could potentially prove a costly misstep for Stainless Games given the recent, celebrated arrival of Blizzard in the CCG genre.

The latest iteration in the casual-friendly Planeswalkers series, Magic 2015 is an attempt to widen the audience of Magic: The Gathering – the great grand-daddy of collectable card games. Presented here in videogame form, the idea is that what you’ll experience virtually will translate one-to-one with an actual Magic game at your local comic book shop.

Magic, if you’re unaware of it, is about building a set of 60 cards and going head-to-head with someone else and their set of cards. By choosing a smart collection of spells, creatures, and resources, the idea is that you’ll increase your chances of winning – but you’ll still need to face off against the luck of the draw and how well your opponent plays their hand.

This year’s iteration of the videogame brings with it some features that fans have been clamouring for, like deep deck-building tools, while inexplicably taking away some that those familiar with the series are sure to miss.

Bleszinski outlines his design philosophy for FPS Blue Streak Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski has given some indication of where he is going with free-to-play arena shooter Blue Streak.

“This isn’t to say I’m going to make a sports game, but there’s so much to be learned from the fan loyalty, the branding of the teams, the player personalities, the broadcasting, the rules of the game,” said Bleszinski.

Not considering a The Last of Us sequel is "a disservice" to fans – Naughty Dog If Naughty Dog didn’t consider a sequel to The Last of Us, it “would be a disservice” to the studio and the game’s fans, says community strategist Arne Meyer.

Destiny: no cross-platform so playing field is level Cross-platform play isn’t happening in Destiny because Bungie fears players will believe those on newer consoles have an advantage in the game’s PvP modes.

Doom preview The original Doom games were similar to their so-called daddy, Wolfenstein: run-and-gun corridor shooters, where exploration was limited to secret stashes and multi-coloured key cards. Doom 3, an intended reboot of the original Doom, had tacked-on survival elements and one hell of an artificial difficulty booster, by way of a flashlight that couldn’t be held at the same time as a weapon.

Reportedly a technical limitation, according to ex-id Software guru John Carmack, this mechanic faux pas was later corrected for Doom 3: BFG Edition, which illuminated the corridor-shooting tendencies of the series, albeit at a much slower pace than the preceding titles. Now, with the unveiling of Doom, the franchise is set to return to its roots in an even bigger way.

The executive producer of all things Doom, Marty Stratton, was on hand to offer context to the live singleplayer demonstration in what he described as an “origin game, [a] reimagining of everything that made those original [Doom] games great. The game is called Doom; not 'Doom 4', and not something like 'Enemy Territory: Doom Wars'.” The latter tongue-in-cheek reference is a dig at the strange naming conventions that have been used in the past for Doom’s sibling series, Quake.

Microsoft to cut 18,000 jobs in the next year New Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced that up to 18,000 Microsoft employees will lose their jobs in the next year. It will be the largest round of layoffs in the company's history.

"We will begin to reduce the size of our overall workforce by up to 18,000 jobs in the next year," reads an email Satya Nadella sent to employees today. Microsoft's total head count is over 127,000, meaning this round of redundancies will affect approximately 14 percent of the company's workforce.

The majority of the redundancies are to be former Nokia employees, both professional and factory workers, said Nadella. Redundancies in this division are expected to total around 12,500. In addition, Microsoft will change course on its line of Android-powered Nokia X devices. Some will become Lumia Windows phones.

Honour Roll: Why a new site is putting a spotlight on game reviewers Video Game Review HQ is something of an anomaly: it's a site run by volunteers that is attempting to give gaming critics some recognition for well-written reviews. In doing so, it also seeks to raise the standard of reviewing in general, and also to improve the perception of games journalism in the mainstream media.

Based on the east coast of the United States, it is maintained by an anonymous group of current and former journalists and critics, whose combined experience in the industry totals 77 years (with no single volunteer having fewer than seven years on his or her resume).

Intrigued, we spoke to site founder "Ben" about his mission, and had a nice if somewhat insider-y chat about the state of game critiquing in general.

Microsoft began selling the Xbox One without Kinect in early June, and has been charging US$100 less for it. US sales since then have "more than doubled" on May sales, said Microsoft on the Xbox Wire, citing internal data.

Microsoft expects sales to remain strong through to November as "new blockbuster hits will launch for Xbox One at an incredible pace".

Gigantic is another MOBA A new Seattle-based studio has just thrown another body on the mounting MOBA pyre.

Gigantic is the debut title from Motiga, a start-up founded by StarCraft, Guild Wars and State of Decay lead designer James Phinney. Phinney is joined by Chris Chung, the former CEO of NCsoft's North American and European operations, and chief strategy officer at Trion Worlds.

The game deviates a little from the usual MOBA formula by requiring heroes to fight alongside and protect a huge AI guardian, while also attacking the enemy and their AI guardian. The game will also be played from the third-person action perspective, rather than the more strategically readable isometric perspective.

The Sims 4's impressive character creator is the new gold standard Many of Gameplanet’s reader base probably don’t consider The Sims 4 to be relevant to their interests. As much as I personally love the franchise, I know that The Sims hasn’t attracted the attention of core gamers in a number of years, if it ever did.

But if you’re one of those people who spends an hour creating a character in Fallout: New Vegas or Skyrim before you even start playing the game, then you may want to take a moment to investigate this cartoony life simulator.

I got access to a demo of The Sims 4’s new character creator, which appears to have been inspired by touchscreens in a lot of ways. Instead of using a number of sliders to create your character, you simply click and drag a body part to adjust its shape. If you drag the mouse outward, that part of your sim’s body will get wider. If you pull inwards, it’ll get slimmer. You can move body parts up and down, as well.

Ex-COD: Modern Warfare devs start new studio to create even more FPS games A small team of developers who worked together at Infinity Ward on Call of Duty have set up a new studio to create a new shooter for new-gen consoles, virtual reality, and mobile.

The ambitious new studio is called Reload, and currently has 12 employees whose CVs include games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Ghosts. Reload is led by co-founders James Chung and Taehoon Oh.

"When I first saw what the latest round of VR devices could do, I realised these were not just peripherals but brand new platforms that could transform the way we experience, interact with and create media," said Chung. "It was the perfect time to follow my passion and bring together the most talented people I know under one roof to form a development culture that promotes creativity and collaboration."
