Battlefield 3 for PC will require players to install Origin, Electronic Arts’ new proprietary software service.
Battlefield 3 for PC will not be available on Steam.
When asked if rumours that the retail version of the game would be required to install Origin, Daniel Mastros of development studio DICE said, “Yes, those ‘rumors’ are true :)”
In addition, alpha testers are reporting that their in-game soldier name is linked to their Origin account, and that in order to rename their soldier, they must rename their Origin profile. As a result, players are not able to create more than one soldier profile per Origin account. As the game is in alpha testing, the final product may not have this limitation. Mastros has said DICE will clarify its position on this closer to release.
Battlefield 3 will be released in late October on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
