Activision Blizzard's Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft will receive a major update this coming season, changing deck management and adding a new gameplay mode.

The biggest change is the addition of a "Standard" gameplay mode, which restricts usable cards to only those released in the past two calendar years.

It is intended to give regular variation to the card pool, and to keep Hearthstone balanced and accessible for new players.

Longtime players will find the existing Hearthstone game rebranded as "Wild"; any card a player has collected will be usable in that mode.

Both modes will have Friendly Challenges, Ranked, and Casual play available, while Standard will take point as official format of the Hearthstone Championship Tour.

In addition, possibly to mollify regulars rankled by the mode changes, players who have unlocked all nine heroes will gain an additional nine deck slots, bringing their total to eighteen.

More information and a FAQ – featuring the many nitty-gritty specifics of the changeover – can be found on the Hearthstone blog.

Hearthstone is available now on Mac, PC, iOS, and Android.
