Watch Dogs has been reclassified from MA15+ to R18+ in Australia, due to new content added to the game since September.

"The entire development team has been working hard to polish and fine tune Watch Dogs in order to deliver a truly memorable open world game," Ubisoft said in a statement provided to Gameplanet. "In parallel, the extra time also allowed the team to include a bit of additional content. As per Australian classification guidelines, Ubisoft resubmitted the updated version with the added content to the Australian Classification Board (ACB). The decision to amend the rating of the game from MA15+ to R18+ was made by the ACB."

The Australian Classification Board report states that new scenes have been added to the game that include implied sexual violence. "The game contains references to sexual violence that cannot be accommodated in the MA15+ classification category, which states that 'sexual violence, implied or otherwise, is not permitted'," reads the ACB report, via Kotaku.

Kotaku describes one scene which strongly implies that a 19-year-old Romanian woman is subjected to sexual violence by a human trafficker.

“A version of this computer game has been previously classified MA15+ (with consumer advice of strong themes and violence, gaming experience ay change online) on September 13th 2013," declared the ACB. "In the board’s opinion the modifications to this game contain classifiable elements that alter this classification and exceed a strong impact level."

The game was originally rated MA15+, and was deemed to contain "strong impact" themes and violence, "moderate impact" language, nudity and sex, and "mild impact" drug use. Subsequent to reclassification, only nudity and language have been determined to be of "moderate impact" to audiences. All other categories have been reclassified upwards.

Drug use has undergone the largest shift, from "mild impact" to "strong impact", and violence is now rated at the top end of the scale, at "high impact".

In August, Watch Dogs was rated R18 in New Zealand.

Watch Dogs will be available on May 27 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Ubisoft has recently cut a new trailer that sets up the game's story.
