Despite one of the rockiest game launches in recent memory, SimCity has sold 1.1 million units in its first two weeks on the market.
That means it has reached a million sold faster than any other title in the SimCity franchise.
Around 54 per cent of those sales were made digitally – 44 per cent through EA’s Origin service.
EA also announced that Maxis has increased the game’s server availability by 400 per cent.
“SimCity had a great weekend with sales strong across both North America and Europe, adding to overwhelming demand at launch that has us tracking well beyond expectations for the game,” said EA COO Peter Moore.
“SimCity is one of the storied brands in gaming, and Maxis delivered a game re-envisioned and engineered for the online age.”
The game's launch was marred by ongoing server issues that forced the removal of what Maxis called "non-crucial" gameplay functions. There was also outrage over now-debunked claims by the developer that a chunk of the game's processing was done server-side.
By way of apology, EA is offering those who purchase and register the game before 7:59 PM on March 26 will get an additional EA game for free.
