Space epic Star Citizen has finished its two-headed funding drive with over US$6 million raised.
The US$6,226,891 (AU$5,979,252) in funding consists of approximately US$4.1 million from creator Chris Roberts’ Space Industries site, and US$2.1 million from Kickstarter.
The game reached its Kickstarter goal five days into its campaign, and has met every stretch goal erected since, ensuring the inclusion of motion capture, a full orchestral score, a tablet application, and more.
"I'm completely overwhelmed, humbled and grateful for the support from everybody who backed Star Citizen," Roberts told Joystiq.
"I think we sent a statement to the rest of the gaming world that PCs and space sims are very much alive and kicking. I'm looking forward to creating the game and sharing the journey with this incredible community."
Roberts now intends to wall off the Star Citizen site, granting access only to those who contributed to the game.
“Our intention has always been to make Roberts Space Industries YOUR site. It's not a public advertisement for the game; it's a private community for those who are making the game happen,” he wrote.
“We want your input on what we're doing and we want to share our plans with you; the occasional passer-by doesn't concern us.”
This would happen in a couple of weeks once everyone who pledged on Kickstarter was integrated, he added.
Roberts hoped to have an alpha version of Star Citizen available for testing within a year.
