The first expansion to StarCraft II, subtitled Heart of the Swarm, is now anticipated for release in the first half of 2013, developer Blizzard has confirmed.

Blizzard had not previously announced a release date, however, many had speculated that Heart of the Swarm would be released before the end of this year. The game is currently in beta.

The announcement was made during holding company Activision-Blizzard’s quarterly investors call, in which Blizzard also noted that Diablo III had sold over 10 million copies as of the 30th of September, and confirmed that it was the top-selling PC game in both dollars and units in North America and Europe.

Blizzard president Mike Morhaime also confirmed that an expansion to Diablo III is planned for sometime in the future. “We do have an expansion planned for Diablo, [but] I don’t have any timeline to talk about. I think the most important thing for us always comes down to the quality of the expansion and the gameplay, so that will be a big factor in terms of driving our schedule.”

Meanwhile, the World of Warcraft expansion, Mists of Pandaria, sold 2.7 million copies in its first week.

In conjunction with Activision Publishing, Activision-Blizzard revealed that its quarterly revenue was $841 million, exceeding its projection of $740 million, and surpassing its earnings for the same quarter last year, at $754 million.
