More than 53,000 gamers are currently playing the Path of Exile open beta, according to Grinding Gear Games co-founder Chris Wilson.
Taking a quick break from the “crazy hecticness” that was the beta launch, Wilson told Gameplanet that number was well above expectations, “though thankfully not above the server capacity that we purchased just in case!”
Patching was slow yesterday due to tens of thousands of people attempting to upgrade at once, but more servers were being added to speed up that process.
“The patching speed meant that we haven't yet hit a maximum number of players online,” said Wilson.
The open beta allows players to experience Act Three of the Path of Exile story, where they can explore abandoned docks, markets, temples and sewers in the ruined city of Sarn to uncover the dark truth of their exile.
Crucially, there will be no further character wipes from this point.
Path of Exile is a free-to-play ARPG that features “ethical microtransactions”.
