Former Epic Games designer Cliff Bleszinski has tweeted out some ideas on what he thinks Koch Media could do to improve its recently-acquired Saints Row franchise.

“Keep the crazy action and game mechanics,” he began. “Lose the gimps and dildos and purple suits.”

This may be removing the heart of the game in the eyes of many, but according to Bleszinski, “if your average guy is embarrassed to be playing a sequence in a game when his wife walks in, that‘s a bad sign”.

Publisher THQ has revealed that the weaponised purple dildo used in Saints Row: The Third is responsible for over two million kills since the game's November 17 release.

This information has been derived from a new stat-tracking service running on THQ's official site. In addition to this slightly sordid statistic, the service has revealed 5.8 billion citizens of Steelport have died whilst roaming about town – roughly 85% the population of the world – 44 million pimps, gimps, and prostitutes have been dispatched in Whored Mode, and 650 hot dog mascots have been overcooked to death by players using flamethrowers.

Coupled with this service, THQ has integrated a new overhead map updated in real time allowing players to see all in-game activity, and upload screenshots tagged to locations.

Plunging past shipping containers and burning debris miles above the skyline of Steelport just minutes into the campaign, it seems that Saints Row: The Third is the type of game Niko Bellic might well enjoy.

If the Grand Theft Auto series can be seen as a humorous and crudely sophisticated abstraction from reality, then the Saints Row franchise can be considered another maddened extraction derived from that.

Post-modernist musings aside, this third iteration in the series has been a pleasant surprise on the PC platform. Openly determined to repent for the shortcomings of the previous instalment’s port, Volition took it upon itself to develop the PC release in-house, to avoid the stigma of “port” altogether. It certainly doesn’t feel like one.

GamePron reports that Saints Row: The Third has run afoul of Japan’s censorship board in a single particular. The Penetrator, or “dildo bat”, is a baseball bat encased in a large purple sex toy, and is deemed too graphic for sale in Japan.

Japanese censors have gone back to THQ requesting that the overtly phallic weapon be toned down. The developers must reduce the floppiness of its animation, and remove the “vein” running along its side if they wish to see the game released there.

As if the mere existence of this weapon didn’t make it abundantly clear, Saints Row: The Third is a sandbox title that revels in excess and improbable mayhem. It’s being released for Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3 next Friday.

Take a large space inhabited with marginally sentient characters, throw in a mixture of crazy vehicles, high-rise buildings and a smattering of suitably impressive views, and leave it over to the player as to their level of involvement. It's a concept utilized by developers extensively since the ground-breaking Grand Theft Auto III, released ten years ago this very weekend.

Saints Row may have started down this path, but instead of competing with the gritty Grand Theft Auto series head-to-head, developers Volition opted instead to focus on providing the most outlandish action conceivable. There's no real pretence to anything approaching reality from the outset, and happily, Saints Row: The Third continues down the same path to insanity forged by Saints Row 2 in 2008.

Of course, Volition hasn’t minced words and nor has the Saints Row franchise ever been one for blushing. Like all weapons in the third instalment, the “dildo bat” will have a unique “nut punch” that takes an awfully long time to lose its comedic, schoolyard appeal.
