Poland is a country stuck between two worlds. Visibly affected by a century of conflict, yet also a fully-functional country on 21st-century Earth, it’s a place where glittering skyscrapers and Hashtag-Brands butt up against Soviet mass housing projects and ancient agricultural infrastructure. There’s a cold pragmatism to Poland that clearly gets things done, but maybe not in the most user-friendly way possible. And strangely enough, that’s also visible in its e-sports.

I went to the world championships of World of Tanks in Warsaw at the start of the month, and despite going in skeptical of e-sports in general, I found watching the games to be highly entertaining, enhanced by an electric stadium atmosphere. But I also found that those entertaining matches were marred by problems with personality and tone, and as such I found it hard to fully get into the tournament as an event.

Jeff Gregg: It was about time, right? We had it on Xbox 360 first as we were working with Microsoft, and then the Xbox One just because it's the natural evolution of the ecosystem. But we always knew we wanted to reach as many people as we possibly could with the console version of the game. So once we finally had everything lined up and we could finally work on the PS4 tech, we hit the ground running with open beta and it’s finally great to have it out.

Swedish publisher Paradox Interactive has revealed that it passed on the chance to publish two games that went on to be highly successful.

Speaking at the company's annual conference, vice president of acquisition Shams Jorjani said it turned down the chance to publish The Banner Saga and World of Tanks.

"These games were essentially filtered out, in part, due to them not matching our pillars," said Jorjani, "The Banner Saga is a wonderful game, I love it, it's one of the most gorgeous games I've ever seen, but it's not a Paradox game. It doesn't have the depth that we were looking for at the time. There's a lot of money to be made in a lot of games, but it's not always our money to make."

Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi isn’t particularly happy that World of Tanks on the Xbox 360 will require a Xbox Live Gold membership.

Kislyi told GamesIndustry that meant his game wasn’t 100 per cent free-to-play, but that it was a requirement of being on Microsoft’s platform.

“They cannot drop it for us because they would have to drop it for everyone and it would be a total mess for them,” he said.

A small plaza nestled amidst an overpass, a discount mall, and one of the busiest strips in Bangkok seems an unlikely place to stage an elaborately produced regional eSports final.

It’s after 10pm, and still an oppressive 39 degrees. Exhaust fumes mingle with the siren scent of Bangkok’s notorious street stall cuisine, and the diminutive, improbably named CognacWine is barely audible above the fussy tooting of three-wheeled tuk-tuk taxis ferrying moist British tourists through the traffic on Rama 1 road. As he listlessly holds a large silver trophy adorned with ribbons, CognacWine tells our videographer to airbrush the imminent interview footage in post-production. Just to our right, his six U Are Dead teammates mill about smoking cigarettes while fanning themselves with a novelty-sized cheque for US$50,000.

Wargaming has announced the establishment of a Wargaming.net league for its armoured MMO action game World of Tanks.

The new league is currently scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2013, and will adopt the format of traditional competitive gaming by way of regular regional tournaments and playoffs leading up to a Grand Finals.

The competitive season 2013 will offer a US$2.5 million (AU$2.4 million) prize pool.

Wargaming.net is a London based studio previously responsible for the Massive Assault franchise, along with the otherwise forgettable Order of War from last year. Interestingly, Square Enix took some time out from dealing with slow gameplay, spiked hair and saucer-sized eyes to publish that particular foray into the depths of mediocrity, however it doesn't appear that they've managed to get their hands on World of Tanks yet.
