Deus Ex: Mankind Divided review

While not a triumph, Mankind Divided is an extremely enjoyable cyberpunk adventure with enough content and gameplay options to keep fans of the franchise happy. The main story lacks impact and drops off completely at the end, but the missions are almost universally fantastic, allowing you to flex your cybernetically-enhanced muscles in a multitude of ways.

Eidos Montreal has returned to the world of Deus Ex five years after its resoundingly successful resurrection of the series, Human Revolution. While that game didn't manage to hit the rose-tinted heights of its progenitor, it certainly removed the bad taste left by the bite-sized disappointments of its technologically-hobbled sequel. As a result, hopes were high that Mankind Divided could recapture that same magic and deliver another stunning adventure into an augmented yet broken future. For the most part, Eidos has delivered, but unfortunately, not all of the game's limbs seem to be wired correctly.

Mankind Divided is set two years after the infamous Aug Incident which saw a large proportion of the world’s augmented population temporarily driven insane by a mad-man intent on driving a wedge between the world’s augmented citizens and “natural” humans. Our protagonist Adam Jensen was able to shut down the signal shortly after its activation preventing even further loss of life, but not before an already countless number of innocent lives were lost. The aftermath of this event is at the very core of the Mankind Divided story, which takes place in a world where the augmented are treated with distrust, fear, and outright hatred.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided first impressions

Our download code for Mankind Divided arrived on Tuesday, and fittingly for a sandbox game, there were several things I could do as a result. I could blaze through it on very little sleep in order to get a full review up at embargo. I could take my time and produce a more considered but late review at a future date. I could run our Human Revolution review, changing only those two words. I could ignore it completely. (Admittedly, these choices aren't quite as scintillating as the ones you make in your typical Deus Ex title.)

But really, there was only one choice I could make, for I couldn’t rush through a Deus Ex game if Adam Jensen's fist blades were at my throat. These are titles to soak in, titles to savour and reflect upon. Besides, my Internet currently sucks, so the roughly 45GB download took out my first night of play. This means I'm about 10 hours into a meticulous investigate-everything stealth run, but hopefully I can still provide some insight.

Adam Jensen is back of course – sculpted goatee, shades, gruffness and all

We were all created equal… But in 2029, after the Aug incident which caused the death of millions, mankind stands divided. The oppression of the mechanically augmented has created a climate of fear and resentment, resulting in an escalation of crime and acts of terror. Amid all the chaos, Adam Jensen goes after are the Illuminati, the men and women responsible for tearing the world apart. Armed with a new arsenal of state-of-the-art weapons and augmentations, he must choose the right approach, along with who to trust, in order to unravel a vast worldwide conspiracy.

Deus Ex's "Augs Lives Matter" image sparks controversy

Controversy has erupted following the release of PR imagery for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided that bears similarity to highly charged real-world incidents.

Eidos and Square Enix released set of concept art pieces depicting various cities - including Sydney, London, Berlin, and mystifyingly Blackpool - as they would appear in the game's cybernetically-enhanced future.

The controversy stems from a protest banner in the Moscow image that reads "Augs Lives Matters," echoing the Black Lives Matter movement that began in 2013; the Paris image also sports graffiti saying "les vies des augs comptent," which translates to the same message.

Dividing Mankind: Producer Olivier Proulx on building the next Deus Ex

Q: What did I miss having not been able to attend the hands-on?

Olivier Proulx: I’m sorry to say you missed out on a lot! We came here with a near-final version of the game and asked people to play the first act. They played the Dubai intro, which is the first map of the game where you reintroduced to Adam Jensen. You go straight into infiltration mode – it’s a bit more of a straightforward map – but we use it to teach you some of the game mechanics so there’s a lot of tutorial elements. We even have some hologram sections where we pause the game and give you the option to practice the core mechanics, so you can get comfortable with the stealth systems and the combat systems, and the cover – all that great stuff. And you have a lot of information as to how to use the controls.

Then you move into I would say the meaty part of Mankind Divided, which is set in Prague. There’s a lot of options to just explore, go off the beaten path in a very dense city where you can find side missions and great narrative tidbits hidden everywhere. Obviously you have your main missions you can follow, but you can really get lost – in a good sense – in the city. Then we encouraged players to move forward a little bit and go to Golem City, which is a ghetto outside of Prague, a slums area where unfortunately a lot of the people with body augmentations are being pushed away, while a lot of politics plays around what to do with them following the big events at the end of the previous game. Also, Breach mode was available, and so far it’s been pretty positive response to the preview tour.

Square Enix today announced two new games set within the Deus Ex universe, one of which will be included with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

Deus Ex GO is a mobile title featuring a "stylised interpretation" of Deus Ex gameplay, much in the vein of developer Square Enix Montreal's Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO.

Players will use turn-based hacking, combat, and augmentation abilities to infiltrate enemy locales and solve puzzles, in what studio head Patrick Naud says is "a fresh, reimagined puzzle experience that celebrates the franchise."

Breach is an innovative game mode, included for free with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
In 2027, mechanically-augmented people all over the world suffered from extreme psychotic delusions, lost control of themselves, and started attacking people. Millions died. Hundreds of thousands more were injured and maimed.

In the wake of this global catastrophe, society has become divided by hatred, prejudice, and fear, with many countries now enacting harsh laws. The most notable of these laws is the highly controversial “Human Restoration Act”, aimed at isolating “Augs” and keeping them away from “Naturals”.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is coming August 23rd, 2016 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

In Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, you become Adam Jensen, a counterterrorism agent working for an Interpol unit known as Task Force 29. On the surface, Jensen’s goal is to hunt down terrorists in a world that’s spinning out of control, where mechanically augmented humans live a life of complete and total segregation from the rest of society. But what he’s really after are the Illuminati: the men and women who are always pulling the strings.
His investigation will take you around the world, with the decisions you make and the actions you take playing a crucial role in determining the game’s outcome. Choose between combat, stealth, social, and hacking approaches to achieve your objectives. Be mindful though, as there will be a meaningful consequence to every action and choice you make.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided promises even more choice, better combat

Although it was greeted with near-unanimous acclaim upon release, there were things about Deus Ex: Human Revolution that Eidos Montreal wasn’t completely happy with.

The boss fights were one, of course, but there was also a feeling that the game’s combat wasn’t quite where the dev team hoped it would be. It certainly wasn’t on par with the game’s other pillars of stealth, hacking, and social interactions.

“Combat is one thing we wanted to tweak a little bit,” says Mankind Divided gameplay director Patrick Fortier. “We felt it wasn’t quite on par with the stealth in Human Revolution. So we took time to make it a little more visceral… reactive.”

Players will be able to ghost their way through the entirety of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Eidos Montreal has confirmed.

That includes the game’s boss fights.

The developer was criticised for the way boss fights were handled in 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution, as the use of stealth and hacking tactics was not initially an option.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided directly follows the aftermath of the Aug Incident, a day when mechanically augmented citizens all over the world were stripped of control over their minds and bodies, resulting in the deaths of millions of innocents. The year is now 2029, and the golden era of augmentations is over. Mechanically augmented humans have been deemed outcasts and segregated from the rest of society. Crime and acts of terror serve as a thin veil to cover up an overarching conspiracy aimed at controlling the future of mankind…
