Previously multiplayer-only MOBA Smite will see its first player-vs-environment content drop in the imminent patch 3.17, says developer Hi-Rez Studios.

Dubbed "Xing Tian's Mountain," the mode pits up to five players against increasingly difficult waves of enemies and bosses.

Each wave must be cleared in one minute, after which cooldowns, health, and mana are restored, and a new, tougher wave begins.

Developer Hi-Rez today announced the Hi-Rez Expo, an all-new event to host tournaments of the studio's competitive games.

HRX 2017 will encompass the Smite World Championships, the PC component of which boasts a prize pool of US$1m. An Xbox championship will make its debut, and its prize pool will total US$150,000.

Both tournaments will feature contenders from Australia and New Zealand – players qualify via the Oceania Pro League 2016 Season, a league that offers an AU$100,000 prize pool.

Daring to step out into the spotlight of one of gaming’s most hotly contested categories, Smite is going toe-to-toe with League of Legends, Dota 2, and Heroes of the Storm to name just three contenders. Does it have the chops to duke it out with some of the industry’s biggest titles? Sort of.

Taking control of one of 68 mythical god-themed characters, Smite players need to work together in teams of three to five in order to assault enemy objectives. Players also need to protect their own bases, while protecting or attacking bands of lowly AI-controlled minions. This dynamic tug-of-war for the player’s attention is the crux of the experience, and the fulcrum on which the genre itself is based.

For those new to the genre, a MOBA is part role-playing and part real-time strategy. You must use your spells and abilities to attack enemies or heal your friends, all while levelling up, unlocking new skills, and managing cooldowns.

E-Sports League to operate arena at PAX Aus 2015

ESL will operate a live esports arena at this year's PAX Aus gaming convention.

Multiple tournaments will be held in three games, each with a prize pool and each taking place in a purpose-built arena.

The first announced title is Smite, whose Oceania Regional Championship finals will take place on the Saturday evening, with teams competing for a AU$50,000 prize pool.

Action MOBA Smite launches on XO, Aussie servers are live

Smite has officially launched on Xbox One.

According to developer Hi-Rez Studios, Smite is a new take on the MOBA genre. It pits two teams of five deities against each other, but the action is observed from a third-person perspective rather than above.

The game is free-to-play, but there is a Founder’s Pack available for US$30 until August 31, which includes all present and future gods, as well as 400 gems and two unique skins.

The Smite Oceania Pro League kicks off on July 25, and will culminate months later in finals event with a prize pool of more than US$50,000, Hi-Rez Studios has announced.

The OPL, which will be live streamed here every Saturday and Sunday from 8pm NZT, features eight teams all vying for a place in the Oceania Regional Championships, which take place at PAX Australia.

Hi-Rez Studios has outlined the path Australian and New Zealand teams need to take to make it to the 2016 Smite World Champs.

According to the developer, the first pro season of Smite in Oceania will be as open as possible to allow new teams to participate and join during the season.

“We’re on the search for the best Smite team in Oceania and will send them to Atlanta for the SWC 2016,” it said.

Massively popular, multiplayer online battle arena games have conquered PC gaming and driven the rise of eSports, but despite all the success, the genre is yet to make the same impact – or even much impact at all – on consoles. There have been a couple of efforts at trying to cash in on their massive popularity in the big screen format, but these have largely sunk without trace, hampered by the traditional reliance of the genre on mouse control and top-down perspectives. These barriers to console success have been a tough nut to crack.

Enter Smite, Hi-Rez Studio’s god-on-god tactical smashfest, bearing Thor’s great big hammer. A relative newcomer to the MOBA scene, with the official release of the game only taking place in late March last year, Hi-Rez’s MOBA-with-a-difference has nonetheless built a considerable following since hitting open beta in early 2013, with some 6 million downloads of the free-to-play-title, and a serious (very serious) competitive scene already well developed. The studio behind previous online hits Global Agenda and Tribes: Ascend, Hi-Rez chose the occasion of the $US 2.6 million 2015 Smite World Championships in Atlanta to give media and fans alike a look at the game’s new Xbox One version, set to be released sometime in mid-2015.

Gameplanet grabbed a hands-on with the console version of Smite and also sat down to chat with both Hi-Rez’s chief operating officer Todd Harris and Smite Xbox producer Andy Anderson about the studio’s upcoming attempt to translate the game’s considerable success on the PC to the console market.

The crowdsourced prize pool for the World Championships of mythology-themed MOBA Smite has surpassed US$2m (NZ$2.58m), edging out the total offered by League of Legends’ 2014 World Championship.

That makes Smite the third eSports title to break the two million prize pool barrier, alongside League of Legends and Dota 2.

Currently hovering just above US$2.14 million, the Smite World Championship prize pool is a crowdfunded effort fueled by the Odyssey, an in-game promotion which sells exclusive content to Smite players.
