Mass Effect movie moves ahead

Legendary Pictures has secured the rights to bring BioWare’s Mass Effect saga to movie theatres.

The project is still in the early stages of development but prodcuer Thomas Tull says Mass Effect is “ripe for translation,” adding that it has “depth, compelling characters and an engaging back story.” Ari Arad, co-producer, describes Mass Effect as “a parable whose conflicts mirror the ones we currently face in our own world. This story emphasizes the need for all cultures to learn to work together.”

It’s a sentiment that’s very close to the themes of Avatar, and that movie may have paved the way for a Mass Effect adaptation. The Hollywood Reporter writes, “One of the by-products of the success of ‘Avatar’ has been showing that moviegoers will follow and invest themselves in non-human characters if given a reason to, which opens the door for more alien movies.”

Mass Effect 2 review

I suffer for you guys, I really do. 26 hours of gaming in 48 hours. Ok, so it was a handy excuse to relive the glory days of all weekend gaming. Now that I'm all old and responsible, time to game is less and less available.

I received my copy of the PC version of Mass Effect 2 on Friday, and managed to rush finish it by Sunday afternoon. Still, I blasted through and ignored anything not very essential to the main story.

There’s a lot of info about Mass Effect 2 out there already, be it previews, news, downloadable content, or even Gameplanet’s own Xbox 360 review. Chances are if you are at all interested, you know a fair bit about this game already. So, to be a bit cheeky I'm not going to focus too much on what everyone already knows. Rather, lets look at how this game sits on the PC.

BioWare: ME2 SDTV text can’t be fixed

BioWare has said that Mass Effect 2’s small-text issue on standard definition televisions cannot be addressed through an update to the game and have promised to try and address the issue in future releases in the Mass Effect series.

We speak with BioWare's Greg Zeschuk

BioWare has a reputation for quality and precision, little wonder when you consider that the two people who founded the company are doctors. We caught up with one half of the duo, Dr Greg Zeschuk, through a video conference at EA's Auckland headquarters.

GP: Can you give us a bit more of an idea about how the character transition will work between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2?

Greg: Yeah absolutely! Well, I think we frightened a few people earlier in the year when we suggested that Shepard may in fact be killed in action, then we followed that up with the comments around keeping your saved game. So right from the beginning of Mass Effect we always intended to do a trilogy, and we always wanted you to be able to keep your character and your decisions for the entire arc. You have to have the right data structure in your saved games to be able to carry it all the way forward. So we planned to do that from the beginning, and the key things are who is alive, who is dead - these are the key events that happen in the game. Those are the things we keep track of. It will become more apparent when you play the real thing - at the moment we're being purposely dodgy about how it will all work because we don't want to reveal secrets. But the mechanic of how the game starts is pretty unique, we think, it's something that fans will dig. The key thing is, when you play the game, and you see the fruits of your labour, it's very exciting to have the sense that your personal story is continued.
