Saints Row IV opens with a Jane Austen quote and gets from there to Aerosmith in ten minutes. If that doesn’t sound a good time, get out now.

Some years after the events of Saints Row: The Third, the Boss of the 3rd Street Saints is elevated to the position of the President of the United States. That seems audacious, but it’s nothing compared to what comes next. Leaving its GTA-clone origins in the dust, the game busts into full-blown science fiction, as reptilian aliens the Zin invade, abducting the Boss and his or her crew and placing them in a computer simulation of Steelport.

Betraying the game’s genesis as an expansion to the series’ previous entry, this is a Steelport nearly identical to that game’s city, reskinned around the Zin invasion. Alien structures litter the cityscape, Orwellian messages replace the billboards, and the day/night cycle is replaced by a perpetual red gloom.

The Australian release of Saints Row IV has been delayed, distributor All Interactive Entertainment has confirmed.

The game was due out today, but will instead be available for Windows PC and Xbox 360 on September 12, and PlayStation 3 on September 19.

"Australian fans of Saints Row IV will obviously be disappointed with this delay," said All Interactive Entertainment director Robert Kingston.

The full Saints Row IV soundtrack listing has been released by Volition, and includes a range of artists from The Datsuns and Aerosmith to Ludwig van Beethoven and Paula Abdul.

In related news, the Saints Row IV character creator, Inauguration Station, is now available for Xbox 360 and Windows PC. A PlayStation 3 version is expected next week.

Publisher Deep Silver said the game is identical to the global release in every respect except that a single, short, optional mission has been removed entirely in order to appease Australian sensibilities.

The offending passage of play included the use of virtual alien narcotics that could potentially and temporarily increase certain superpowers in the game, said Deep Silver.

The Australian Classification Board has upheld its decision to keep an unedited version of Saints Row IV out of the country.

At the request of Deep Silver owner Koch Media the game was under review for a second time, but the three-member Board’s verdict was again unanimous.

“In the Review Board’s opinion, Saints Row IV could not be accommodated within the R 18+ classification as drug use related to incentives and rewards is not permitted,” it wrote.

The first DLC for Saints Row IV will be presented mockumentary-style, with the game's characters explaining why certain features and scenes were cut from the game, Volition has announced.

Speaking on a panel at Comic-Con (as reported by Polygon), Volition creative director Steve Jaros said that the DLC will offer a "pastiche of all the things that were cut out of the game", which include a flying, fire-breathing dragon, and a Bollywood-style dance number.

The DLC is called Enter the Dominatrix – the name of a piece of DLC that was planned for Saints Row: The Third before Volition opted to develop a full sequel.

Saints Row IV will get a complete, uncut release in New Zealand, publisher Deep Silver has confirmed.

On Tuesday the game was refused classification by the Australian Classification Board due to the appearance of an anal probe weapon and “alien narcotics”.

Deep Silver said it plans to submit an edited version of the game to the Australian Classification Board in the hope of obtaining a rating.

Saints Row 4 was refused classification by the Australian Classification Board due to the appearance of an anal probe weapon and “alien narcotics” in the game.

Yesterday the Board announced that its decision was due to the game’s “interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context” as well as “elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards”.

"Deep Silver can confirm that Saints Row IV was denied an age classification in Australia. Volition, the developer, are reworking some of the code to create a version of the game for this territory by removing the content which could cause offence without reducing the outlandish gameplay that Saints Row fans know and love. Saints Row IV has been awarded PEGI 18 and ESRB M ratings where fans can enjoy their time in Steelport as originally intended."

Chris Stockman tweeted that "the word around the campfire is SR4 is shipping on current gen consoles in late August”.
