Fortnite, the next game by Gears of War developer Epic, is strongly inspired by indie darling Minecraft.

In the game, players team up to gather minerals in order to build and destroy structures. At night, players must fend off zombies in third-person shooter gameplay.

Fortnite lead designer Lee Perry says he and his team drew significant inspiration from Minecraft. In a series of tweets, he said, “Minecraft was an inspiration for sure.”

Unlike Minecraft however, Fortnite will restrict the kinds of objects players can build: “Minecraft lets you build ANYTHING, we are focusing on constructing 'buildings' specifically.”

“I see lots of questions asking if #fortnite is freeform construction. It is. It's not scripted or just boarding up existing structures.”

“Chance of weapon crafting/traps, lvl system, underground exploration, Boss fights, team survival mode, rare loot? #Fortnite Chances? High.”

The game was revealed over the weekend at the Spike VGAs. Epic is looking for a publisher for the game, at which point its scope and release will be considered.

Epic Games is working on another four games, none of which have been announced.
