EA has announced that Need for Speed World has entered closed beta testing today.

The MMO racer will take place in a world that sprawls for 241 square kilometres (150 miles for those living in backwards countries), wherein players will compete for ranks against 12 others at any one time on servers that can accommodate 10 million users.

“Need for Speed World is the world’s first MMO racer – a completely new entertainment experience for speed junkies all over the world,” said John Doyle, the game’s Senior Producer. “We have expanded Need for Speed’s classic adrenaline-fuelled racing with an all-new power up system and deep RPG style progression to create a truly massive, socially-connected white-knuckle Need for Speed experience.”

On the game’s official website, Doyle continued, “We’ll be running a number of beta events over the next several months, all aimed at testing one or more aspects of the experience. If you didn’t get into this round, don’t worry, there will be more stages and many, many more invites in the weeks and months ahead.”

Amongst the activities to take place in the beta, players will be able to design a Porsche 959 – the best will become available in-game and the designer will be acknowledged in the credits.

EA has also released eight new in-game screenshots.
