Bohemia shares Arma 2 piracy statistics

Bohemia Interactive, developer of the military simulator Arma 2, has revealed some statistics shedding light on the extent to which the game has been pirated.

Speaking with PC Gamer, Bohemia CEO Marek Španěl said, “Our statistics from multiplayer show that for every three legitimate buyers playing their game in multiplayer, there are 100 (failed) attempts to play with a pirated version.”

“This indicates that piracy is an extremely widespread problem on PC, and it's also really worrying for us as a mid-sized, independent, PC-oriented developer.

Bohemia Interactive’s sandbox military shooter has received a patch today which includes several bug fixes, a new gameplay mode and additional features, such as a new attack helicopter, the AH-64D Apache.

Additionally, the 1.05 patch introduces a new mini campaign, Eagle Wing, that expands on one of the seven endings to ArmA II. The new Warfare mode, curiously entitled When Diplomacy Fails, supports three-sided online war with the ability to use diplomacy to create alliances.

Developer Marek Španěl discusses some of the changes on his blog, writing, "With this new update, ARMA II users receive an important improvement of the game. We hope you will enjoy it and that the effort we put into it was worthwhile for everyone. We hope you will enjoy your visit to Chernarus even more now, until the new operation in Takistan starts."

The patch can be downloaded at the game’s official website. A full list of patch notes follows:

ArmA II expansion detailed

IDEA Games and Bohemia Interactive announced today the development of ArmA II Operation Arrowhead; the standalone expansion pack to the ArmA II PC military simulator.

Three years after the conflict in Chernarus, portrayed in the original ArmA II, a new flashpoint in the Green Sea region heats up and coalition forces led by the US Army are sent to Takistan to quickly restore peace and prevent further civilian casualties.

Set into the new environment of hilly central Asia, Operation Arrowhead will offer combat simulation experience in a modern day setting with freedom of movement, actions and tactics. Players will enlist into various roles within the US Army, from basic infantrymen, through special operatives, to pilots and tank crew in this new instalment from Bohemia Interactive.

A new trailer for Bohemia's new tactical shooter to mark the game's launch.

Bohemia Interactive has released a new trailer for ArmA II to coincide with the game's release in Europe. Unfortunately the game won't be reaching New Zealand until 20th August, so you'll have to make do with this video for now.

ArmA II is the sequel to ArmA: Armed Assault and the spiritual successor of the highly respected Operation Flashpoint series.

The game's Real Virtuality engine has been in "constant development" for 10 years and is used "as the basis for training simulators used by armies across the globe, including the United States Marine Corps, UK Ministry of Defence and Australian Defence Force."
