Steam news is reporting that a patch is available for Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II.
This patch improves memory heap management to reduce 'out-of-memory' crashes that were plaguing certain systems, including 32-Bit Vista on High and Ultra settings. This error was often reported as 'error 183 failed to create to create dump'.
The patch will be applied when your Steam client is restarted.
The strategy genre has an interesting new entry coming into its fold.
Dawn of War II isn't like most RTS games, and that's on purpose. The developers look at it more like an RTT (Real Time Tactical) game instead. The single player is a unique blend of RTS/RTT/RPG (try saying that three times fast!).
You play as a group of Space Marines (tough guys in battle armour) who fly around a solar system with various planets to fight upon. The RPG elements come in the form of character levelling and war gear. Instead of traditional RTS's where you have to build a base in each mission and build new units, here your army continues on from mission to mission. This is so - hopefully - you will care about them a bit more. Dawn of War II (both single player and multiplayer) is not about sending a huge army into battle to die and then be rebuilt. No, the point here is to control a slightly smaller than usual group of forces and try keep them alive for as long as possible.
We have a new trailer from Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2, due for release around Autumn 2009.

Set in Games Workshop’s highly popular Warhammer 40,000 science fiction universe, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II is being developed exclusively for Windows PC.[/quote]
I bet you are thinking Dawn of War II is a real-time strategy (RTS) game. You can be forgiven for thinking this, because that's what the first Dawn of War was, and the sequel looks like an RTS game at first glance. But it isn't really an RTS game.
Relic sees the RTS genre today as becoming stagnant. They're all more or less the same, and rarely involve new concepts to overcome the same learning curve, which can be quite intimidating if you are new to the strategy genre.
With Dawn of War II, Relic aims to take things to a whole new level, effectively blending elements from RPG and RTS (or rather, RTT - Real Time Tactical) genres. It uses a similar cover system to that found in Company of Heroes, along with an updated Essence graphics engine, but adds even more destructible cover.
This game has some mighty big shoes to fill. Developer Relic revolutionised the RTS genre with their innovations in the first Dawn of War and in Company of Heroes. After playing a pre-release version at E3, we can tell you Dawn of War II looks to be every bit as bloody good as its predecessor.
Dawn of War II takes everything great from the original - brutal melee combat, great unit animations, over the top abilities, destructible environments, fast-paced action, a grim and gritty feel, over the top abilities - and expands on them. Powered by an updated Essence Engine which also drove Company of Heroes, Dawn of War II now has a cover mechanic. In a fight, your troopers don’t just stand out in the open, blasting it out with the enemy. They can take cover behind buildings and vegetation. They can even take cover inside the craters that Assault Marines make when you send them jumping into the middle of a pack of Orks. You can also send your men into a building to garrison it, giving your men heavy cover at the expense of mobility.
THQ has released a new gameplay trailer from Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, showcasing this sequel developed by Relic Entertainment and due to hit the store shelves in autumn 2009, exclusively for Windows PC.
Dawn of War II will use an updated version of the Essence Engine (Essence Engine 2.0) that powers Relic's World War II real-time strategy game Company of Heroes and its expansion pack Opposing Fronts.
