Sony Computer Entertainment has revealed that the original EverQuest, released in 1999, will go free-to-play in March.

EverQuest producer Thom Terrazas has blogged on the official site: "Anyone who wishes to start, return or continue to play one of the 'Best Games of All-Time' can simply download and play EverQuest on their terms – think of it as Free to Play, Your Way.

"The game will now be setup to be flexible so that *you* can decide how much to pay, based on how much fun you're having."

An FAQ has been issued to explain how this new pricing structure will work. In addition to the free-to-play model, new content will be introduced as the MMO celebrates its 13th birthday.

EverQuest's sequel EverQuest II went free-to-play last month.
