Ubisoft scraps online pass for Driver: SF

Ubisoft has cancelled its online pass program for Driver: San Francisco.

According to Xbox LIVE Support, Uplay Passport codes were printed incorrectly. The code ships with all first-hand copies of the game and unlocks the game’s online features. Those buying the game second-hand would have had to buy a new code for a nominal fee.

Such online passes are becoming increasingly popular among publishers as they incentivise first-hand sales and allow publishers to make a small profit on second-hand sales.

Ubi brings back always-on DRM for PC Driver SF

Ubisoft has announced that the PC version of Driver San Francisco will require a permanent Internet connection in order to play.

Responding to a tweet enquiring about the game’s digital rights management (DRM) system, Ubisoft’s Mathieu Willem said, “PC version requires permanent internet connection.”

In the battle against piracy, Ubisoft has attempted to implement “always-on” DRM in the past with poor results. Assassin’s Creed II, Settlers 7 and Silent Hunter V all attempted to run DRM that required the computers of players to be able to communicate with Ubisoft authentication servers. The servers frequently went down meaning legitimate players were unable to use a product they’d purchased, sometimes for days in a row.

Layoffs at Ubisoft Reflections

Ubisoft has confirmed that 12 staff at its Reflections studio in Newcastle, England, have been made redundant and a further seven will not have their contracts renewed.

Ubisoft Reflections is currently working on Driver: San Francisco. A source at Reflections cited by website Eurogamer claims that the sluggish development of the franchise reboot is to blame.

According to the source, “There have been delays with the project, and because of our delays, Ubisoft have had to change their plans for our studio. What that means exactly I'm not sure.
