Nintendo will have a much younger president in June

Nintendo will have a much younger president in June

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima will step down on June 28, the company has announced.

Kimishima was promoted to president after the death of Satoru Iwata in 2015.

To this point, he has overseen the release of the Switch, Nintendo’s move into the mobile space, the release of some of Nintendo’s most successful games, and the launch of cardboard peripheral line Labo.

Nintendo has only had five presidents in its 128-year history, and Kimishima’s two-and-a-half-year reign at the top will be the company’s shortest ever.

Nintendo said it wants a younger leader, and Kimishima’s replacement will be Shuntaro Furukawa, who currently runs Nintendo’s global marketing department.

Overwatch, FIFA 18, and CS:GO loot boxes ruled illegal in Belgium

Loot boxes in at least three high-profile games contravene Belgian’s gaming legislation, and could attract fines and even prison sentences for publishers as a result.

As Ars Technica reports, loot boxes in Overwatch, FIFA 18, and Counter Strike: Global Offensive have all been found to violate the country’s gaming legislation by Belgian’s Gaming Commission.

The three games must remove their loot boxes or be in criminal violation of the country's gaming legislation, which carries penalties of up to €800,000 ( about $1.3m), and up to five years in prison. The prison sentence can be doubled if minors are involved.

Nintendo Switch hacked, exploit is unpatchable

The Nintendo Switch has been hacked, opening it up to pirate software and online cheats.

As Digital Foundry reports, two similar hardware-based exploits that use a bug in the system’s Nvidia Tegra X1 processor have been revealed by veteran console hackers fail0verflow.

Because the exploits are hardware-based, Nintendo and chip maker Nvidia are both unable to patch them out.

Right now, that means that a full, touch-enabled version of Linux with 3D acceleration support is now available for the Switch, and that homebrew code execution is possible.

In the near future, Nintendo will likely do battle with pirates via system updates, hoping to make it as difficult as possible to cheat its popular hybrid.

Australian High Court orders Valve to pay AU$3m over misleading refund policy

Valve has lost an appeal filed in The High Court of Australia, and must now pay an AU$3 million penalty for breaching Australian Consumer Law.

The Australia Competition and Consumer Commission commenced legal action against Valve in August 2014, contending that Steam’s refund policy was in breach of Australian law.

At the time, Valve did not offer refunds for games at all. It now offers refunds on games played for fewer than two hours, with some caveats.

Quantic Dream sues media over toxic workplace stories

Quantic Dream is suing a pair of French media outlets that reported on working conditions at the studio.

Kotaku has learned that French newspaper Le Monde and website Mediapart are being sued by the Detroit: Become Human developer in what is believed to be the first incident of a video game studio taking legal action against the press for negative reporting.

In January, former employees of Quantic Dream claimed that inappropriate behaviour, sexism, and homophobia are all commonplace at the studio.

The accusations began after about 600 photoshopped images dating back to 2013 were leaked from the company,

Quantic founder David Cage was accused of making dirty jokes and inappropriate remarks about actresses in his games, as well as homophobic or racist jokes.
