Reggie Fils-Aime is handing over the reins to Bowser

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime will be retiring in April after 15 years with the company.

Fils-Aime joined Nintendo in 2003 as executive vice president of sales and marketing, before stepping up to president and COO in 2006.

In a heart-felt video to fans, Fils-Aime explained that his final day will be April 15, after which he plans to spend more time with his wife, family and friends.

THQ Nordic raises $225m for future acquisitions

In an interview with GamesIndustry THQ CEO Lars Wingefors said "Ultimately, on the very long-term basis I want all my companies to be financed through the cashflow from making great games that fans and consumers will enjoy and pay for. However, our strategy right now is to build something substantial, diversified and evergreen through acquisitions and substantial organic development growth."

Ex-EA Chief Design Officer shows off new game

Patrick Söderlund, the former Chief design officer at EA, has released concept art and footage for his studio Embark's first game.

Revealed on the studios blog, Embark is creating a "cooperative free-to-play action game set in a distant future, about overcoming seemingly impossible odds by working together."

The game is being developed with an internally augmented version of Epic’s Unreal Engine, with Söderlund noting the "team is now having lots of fun getting to know the engine, and are making good headway."

That Untitled Goose Game just got delayed

That Untitled Goose Game just got delayed

Developer House House has just announced that its Untitled Goose Game has slipped from its early 2019 release window. The developer hasn't given a concrete date, only stating that the game is coming "later 2019".

No reason was given as to why the game was delayed other than the developer stating the release slip is due to "circumstances beyond our control" and that the delay "means we'll be able to make the best goose game possible".

The goose is my spirit animal, so I'm understandably upset that I won't get to live out my wildest dreams just yet. Untitled Goose Game is one of the more bizarre indie titles coming this year and sees players stepping into the boots (webbed feet) of a bastard goose, hellbent on stealing from the local people and making their lives, in general, a hilarious nightmare.

Anthem's Day One patch aims to improve loading times

Anthem's Day One patch aims to improve loading times

Anthem's Day One patch is dropping on Friday alongside the game's release and it's expected to fix one of the game's biggest complaints: load times.

The official launch of BioWare's open world shooter is February 22, however premier subscribers to EA Origin Access were granted access on the 15th... making this "Day One" patch more of a "Day Seven" – but who's counting?

As a result, premier members have encountered a slew of bugs. The most noticeable of those being load times, which either last several minutes or in some instances result in an "infinite loading screen."

In addition to fixing load times, Anthem's Day One patch will also seek to fix issues with challenge tracking, connectivity problems, and UI feedback regarding weapon and gear mods.

Square Enix hinted at an upcoming reveal during its third quarter earnings report today.

While noting that Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Just Cause 4 helped boost overall sales when compared to 2018, what was of particular interest was Square Enix's assertion that FY2020 would have record earnings.

The company didn't go into specifics, saying only that announcements are in store in the build-up to E3 2019.

THQ Nordic's net sales increased 700% in 2018

For the year ending December 31, Nordic reported net sales of USD$447.6 million. Compared to the previous year's USD$55.1 million, that's a staggering growth of 713%. Not bad.

Much of this growth can be attributed to the acquisition of Koch Media and its publishing arm, Deep Silver.

In the words of Respawn Entertainment, "cheaters suck."

In an update on the Apex Legends subreddit, the developer noted that over 16,000 cheaters have already been banned from the game.

At the moment players still have to report cheaters through an external site, but the same reddit post describes an in-game reporting feature as "a very good idea :)" so it's likely to be in the works.

Activision Blizzard lays off 775 staff after "record results"

Long-rumoured layoffs at Activision Blizzard were confirmed yesterday during the company's earnings call.

While CEO Bobby Kotik opened the call with a declaration that the company had seen "record results" that were "the best in our history," he noted that the Activision Blizzard's focus was "de-prioritizing initiatives that are not meeting expectations and reducing certain non-development and administrative-related costs across the business."

The result will be an 8% reduction off its work force, equating to around 775 staff. The layoffs will occur across Activision, Blizzard, and King.

King-owned Z2Live studio has been closed completely. The Seattle-based mobile game developer consisted of 78 staff.
