MuchDifferent.com has claimed a new record for the most number of simultaneous participants in a game session with their online browser FPS prototype Man vs Machine.
Over the weekend, 999 gamers were split into two factions for the two-hour battle, easily outpacing Planetside's existing record of 600.
Each gamer paid USD $29 to participate, with many being turned away once the player limit had been reached. Despite a relatively lag-free experience, it appears balancing issues hampered gameplay during the tournament.
MuchDifferent's CEO Christian Lönnholm has stated in a recent blog post: " I am very proud that we could show the world such a massive game with no lag and great responsiveness.
"Getting a game balanced is hard and our guesswork proved to be quite off the mark. In the end, I think most people had an enjoyable experience of the sheer massiveness of it all and having the game run smoothly helped with that."
