Sony have demonstrated a new motion sensing controller at their E3 press conference in Los Angeles this morning.
This engineering prototype consists of a round wireless remote with a "glowing sphere" attached, which is tracked by the PlayStation EyeToy, allowing its movement to be translated to on-screen activity with astonishing accuracy.
The unit houses a series of LEDs that alternate in colour, and can be controlled by the user to denote different activities. Pointedly, Sony have claimed that some activities aren't possible without using the integrated buttons, perhaps in reference to Microsoft's controller-free Natal system unveiled yesterday.
Sony boasts that this new controller will provide dedicated one-to-one 3-D tracking and pointing, and "sub-millimetre accuracy".
The demonstration consisted of object manipulation in 3-D environments, a switch to first-person mode, and even a simulation of a bow and arrow using two controllers. Sony have estimated they'll have retail units available sometime around autumn 2010, and we'll bring you more information as it's released over the coming months.
