It's official: the next Call of Duty is Black Ops 4.

The Treyarch-developed game has been given a release date of October 12 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

A Blops 4 community event is planned for May 17.

Call of Duty usually releases in November, but it seems likely Activision is hoping to get a head start on Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2, which comes out on October 26.

"Forget what you know" is the game's tagline, which is good advice if you wish to be surprised by a CoD title these days.

Although a Nintendo Switch version was not mentioned, some are holding out hope that it will be announced during tonight's Nintendo Direct. The last CoD title on Nintendo hardware was 2013's Ghosts on the Wii U.

Last month, self-styled industry insider Marcus Sellars claimed a Nintendo Switch version of Blops 4 is in development at a studio that has worked on CoD games before. According to Sellars, the Switch version will support DLC, HD Rumble and motion controls.
