Sony has sold more than 70.6 million PlayStation 4s, the company announced today.

For comparison's sake, the PlayStation 1 sold 103 million, PlayStation 2 sold more than 155 million in nine years on the market, and the PlayStation 3 sold more than 83.8 million.

Today Sony also announced that more than 617.8 million PS4 games have been sold at retail stores and through digital downloads on PlayStation Store, more than two million PlayStation VR units and 12.2 million VR games have been sold.

All of the above PS4 figures are as of December 3, 2017.

"We are delighted that so many people are enjoying the unique entertainment proposition of PlayStation 4 and that an emerging technology like PlayStation VR continues to gain traction,"
said Sony Interactive Entertainment chairman Andrew House.

"I cannot thank our fans and partners enough. Their support, since the launch of very first PlayStation in 1994, has helped to make PlayStation one of the biggest console gaming networks in the world. We will continue to work closely with partners to maintain this momentum and remain steadfast in making PS4 the best place to play."

There are more than 130 games and "video contents" in development for PS VR that will be launched by the end of 2018.
