A new tier of weapons, private match PvP, and better rewards for completing content are all coming to Destiny 2 in the next couple of months.
The changes, outlined in a lengthy blog post today by Bungie, are a response to widespread criticism of the game's content, and Bungie's communication in general.
Said criticism led to Bungie cancelling today's live stream in favour of a community update.
Most recently, Destiny 2 players discovered that a hidden scaling system was reducing the amount of XP they were being awarded, despite the fact that on-screen information suggested it was being granted at the normal rate.
Last weekend, as the outcry reached fever pitch, Bungie claimed the XP system was "not performing the way we’d like it to", and switched it off. However, it also doubled the amount of XP needed to level up.
The main reason to level up past 20 in Destiny 2 is to earn Bright Engrams, which hold unique items like shaders, emotes, ships, sparrows, and more. The only other way to get these is to pay real-world cash for them.
So, to some players, this pair of apparent deceptions from Bungie just proved the company is only interested in making money.
Today, Bungie announced that the XP system is getting another overhaul.
"We already see that the newly adjusted 160K XP per level value means that leveling is too slow for some activities, and we have begun the process of collecting data and recalibrating XP earn rates to improve them as quickly as possible," the company said.
It also announced a new weapon tier called Masterworks, which will feature stat trackers, random, re-rollable stat bonuses, unique item tooltips, and item details screens.
Current legendaries will be able to be upgraded to Masterworks or you can just find them in places like the Raid and Trials of the Nine Weapons.
Elsewhere, Bungie is adding armour ornaments, a better emote interface, and more.
Some of the new features will launch on December 5 alongside the game's Curse of Osiris expansion, others will go live on December 12, and a few more will be available in January.
"Going forward, Destiny 2’s post-launch game systems, features, and updates are being designed specifically to focus on and support players who want Destiny to be their hobby – the game they return to, and a game where friendships are made," Bungie's Luke Smith and Chris Barrett wrote today.
"We want Destiny to be a game that fits into your life, providing you with reasons to log in and play with your friends, clans, and families. We want Destiny to be a world you want to be a part of.
"We know it’s frustrating when there isn’t enough of a dialog with the development team," the pair continued.
"You have our commitment that we’re going to do a better job going forward."
