The next expansion for Path of Exile is a battle for world control aimed at the game's more experienced players.

In War for the Atlas, an ancient entity known as The Elder has arrived to battle The Shaper for control of the Atlas of Worlds.

This has resulted in The Atlas being redrawn, and there are now 32 radomised maps in Path of Exile's ever-evolving end-game.

As these maps are completed, the Atlas is altered to show who is in control. As The Elder grows more powerful, he consumes The Shaper's creations to manifest his own Guardians.

So, if the scales are tipped in favour of The Elder by the player's actions, it can appear on the map briefly to usher in a special event.

War for the Atlas contains more than 50 new Unique Items, 10 new Gems, and four new necromancy skills.

"These are some of the most difficult battles ever and everyone's war is different. You decide what's best for you in terms of what items you want to fight for," Grinding Gear Games founder Chris Wilson told MMO Bomb.

Path of Exile: War for the Atlas launches on December 9 on PC, and shortly after on Xbox One.

At the same time, Grinding Gear will launch The Abyss Challenge League.

"Fight foes that spill forth from the underworld beneath your feet as you journey across Wraeclast," said Grinding Gear.

"Claim valuable new Abyss Jewels to customise your characters and items in new ways."

More details are coming next week.
