Athletico Esports has scraped by top seed Corvidae in a nailbiter of a final to take out the Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six ANZ Invitational.
Eight teams qualified for the Invitational, with Corvidae and Taboo ranking first and second respectively coming into the playoffs.
While Corvidae powered through to the final as expected, Taboo was bested by Athletico in the semis, setting up a final between the region's two best-performing teams.
The final was an incredibly tense five hour encounter: three maps went into overtime as momentum swung back and forth between both teams, and it was all decided on a tie-breaking fifth map.
There, it was Athletico Esports that managed to emerge from the smoke and destruction of the Kafe Dostoyevsky map to take the AU$5000 prize and the title of ANZ Champions 2017.
Reputations will be back on the line for the upcoming APAC Pro League as the top eight teams from the ANZ Invitational will compete for two spots in the APAC Pro League Finals.
The two victorious squads will face off against the best teams from Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia in a live event to be held in Sydney on October 21-22.
The finalists will then secure a place in the Season 3 Finale in Sau Paolo on November 17–19 where they will face the best teams from North America, Europe and LATAM.
