A new eye-catching action RPG that combines mutants, kung-fu, and weird-ass machinery has made its debut at Gamescom.

Biomutant is an open world title from a new indie team called Experiment 101, which is led by former Mad Max and Just Cause game director Stefan Ljungqvist.

According to the studio, Biomutant lets players change their character’s abilities and appearance with powerful mutations, bionic prosthetics, and weapons. That means you can grow claws, sprout wings, or attach a robotic leg, and each choice will impact the way your hero plays in real-time combat that blends melee martial arts and firearms.

Said mutant will scurry around a post-apocalyptic universe filled with fantastic creatures, looking to stop a plague that is ruining the land. There's also something about the Tree-of-Life is bleeding death from its roots, and the usual 'you are the special one that will shape this world for good or for ill' carry-on, but I won't subject you to it.

Biomutant is expected to launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC in 2018.

THQ Nordic is handling publishing duties.
