Age of Empires is rising again.
A fourth mainline game in the legendary series is coming to Windows 10 PC, publisher Microsoft Studios announced today.
Age of Empires 4 is in development at Homeworld, Company of Heroes, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War studio Relic Entertainment.
"Relic Entertainment has a wealth of experience in creating high-quality RTS games, making them the ideal partner to develop Age of Empires 4," said Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Isgreen.
"We are thrilled to be working with them and can’t wait for fans to see their unique and exciting contribution to the Age of Empires franchise."
Age of Empires 4 is the first mainline entry in the real-time strategy franchise since 2005’s Age of Empires 3.
"We can’t wait to tap into our strengths as a studio to fuse historical context with deep strategic gameplay, and to bring this franchise back to the forefront of gaming and into the hands of its beloved community," said Relic.
Microsoft also announced today that Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, a 4K remaster of the 20-year-old Age of Empires, will be released on October 19, exclusively on Windows 10 in the Windows Store.
Microsoft is also working on a new definitive edition of Age of Empires 2 (one already released in 2013), and on an HD remake of Age of Empires 3.
