The Switch has sold faster in its launch month than any other video game system in Nintendo history, the company says.

Nintendo says it sold 906,000 units of the Switch in March, adding that it achieved the sales milestone "in a non-traditional month for a console launch".

A global sales figure for the Switch is expected to be announced at Nintendo's fiscal earnings report on April 27. Research firm NPD estimates that 1.5 million Switch consoles have been sold to date.

Nintendo did confirm that it has sold more than 1.3 million copies of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the US: 925k for Switch, and about 460k for Wii U.

That means Nintendo has sold more copies of the game on Switch than it did Switch consoles.

"This may be attributed to people who purchased both a limited edition of the game to collect and a second version to play," Nintendo said.

Whatever the case, Breath of the Wild is Nintendo's fastest-selling launch game ever, and the fastest-selling in the Zelda franchise.

Without global sales totals, it's hard to make comparisons, but it's worth noting that Xbox One sold more than two million units in its first 18 days, while Sony sold 2.1 million PlayStation 4 units in its first 14 days.

The Wii shipped 3.19 million units to retail during the holiday quarter ended December 31, 2006, and ultimately went on to sell over 100 million units during its lifetime.

In related news, analysts from Citigroup Inc. are expecting a mini version of the Switch to be sold in the fiscal year ending March 2019.
