Rumour has it a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic title is in the prototype phase at Star Wars: The Old Republic developer BioWare Austin.

That tidbit comes via Liam Robertson, a journalist who runs Did You Know Gaming? and Unseen64 – the latter of which is a website about "cancelled, unseen, and beta games".

"I’ve learned now that [BioWare Austin is] pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games and they’re going to be doing that for the indefinite future," he said during a recent podcast segment.

(You need to pay US$1 to his Patreon to hear it; I cribbed this transcription from The Star Wars Game Outpost).

"What they’re currently working on right now – and I have this on good authority – is a sort of remake/revival of Knights of the Old Republic," Robertson continued.

"I don’t know when this is set to come out, but it has been in development for a little while now.

"I’ve heard that it isn’t exactly a remake anymore, but it started as a remake/revival. Now it’s kind of going from that blueprint in sort of its own original thing. I guess we’ll see what that turns out to be, but they are prototyping it right now."

According to Robertson, the game won’t be KOTOR III.

"I think this is sort of like wiping the slate clean," he said.

"I think this is going to embrace the new Star Wars universe lore because Knights of the Old Republic was sort of just pushed into the expanded universe, the Legends canon of Star Wars."

BioWare's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was released in 2003 to widespread acclaim. An Obsidian-made sequel, The Sith Lord was released a year later.

In 2015, Cinelinx editor-in-chief Jordan Maison reported that a KOTOR remake or remaster was in the works. However, a little over a year later, he reported that the project had been put "into stasis" by EA after internal issues.

Last month, BioWare's Drew Karpyshyn, who was the lead writer on the first KOTOR game, tweeted that he was working on a new game.

Assuming the above is true, we might hear about KOTOR during Star Wars Celebration next week, or perhaps at EA Play in June.

If the rumours turn out to be false, there's always Apeiron, a KOTOR fan project being made under the banner of Poem Studios. It is a remastering of the original game with added content, new worlds, missions, HUD, inventory, items, and companions.

There's also the "swashbuckling" Star Wars action-adventure game in development at EA, and – of course – Star Wars Battlefront 2.
