A cute locally-developed pixel art action RPG is currently seeking funds on Kickstarter.

The Tale of the Ice Staff is an 8-bit style title whose randomly-generated dungeons, side quests, mini bosses, and lore will give players at least 40 hours of gameplay, according to its Kickstarter page.

The dev team – led by two locals including a former Ubisoft, Microsoft and Gameloft employee – is seeking NZ$30,000 to create the first chapter of the game.

Ice Staff is in development for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but its stretch goals include versions for 3DS, PS4, and Xbox One.

A total of NZ$310,000 would see the "full game" (i.e. all chapters) developed with cutscenes, skill trees, and many more extras.

Should it be funded, the game will spend some time in Steam's Early Access programme as well. It was Greenlit last year.

Should the Kickstarter fail, it is suggested that it might see the light of day as a free-to-play mobile game.

"We would much rather go with our Plan A of utilizing the fantastic Kickstarter community!" the dev team wrote.

At the time of publication, The Tale of the Ice Staff has raised NZ$2,300 from 91 backers, and has 15 days to cross its funding goal.
