British developer Climax Studios has opened a new studio in Auckland, New Zealand.

Climax is probably best known for 2007’s Silent Hill: Origins and 2008’s Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Its Portsmouth, England studio is currently working on Assassin's Creed Chronicles for Ubisoft.

According to Develop, the new studio comprises eight former Gameloft employees (who lost their jobs there in late January) and studio head Andy Wilton.

It is working on augmented reality projects on behalf of a large US corporation, and hopes to expand and take on more AR and VR projects.

"It was a great opportunity to hire a group of engineers, who were both experienced, talented and are already used to working as a team,” said Climax CEO Simon Gardner.

“In addition I have known and worked with Andy for most of my life and he has worked for Climax as a contractor on numerous occasions in the past. The opportunity was just too good to miss.”
