The latest generation of Sony and Microsoft consoles is outselling the previous generation by a considerable margin.

In its video game sales report for September 2015 yesterday, analyst firm NPD stated that "after 23 months on the market, combined PS4 and Xbox One sales are 40 percent higher than the combined 23 month totals for PS3 and 360."

This is despite a 27% drop in hardware sales from the same period in 2014, though NPD admits last September's figures were buoyed by the release of system-seller Destiny.

On the software side (bearing in mind NPD only tracks new games at physical US retailers), sports games dominated the charts, with NBA 2K16 and Madden NFL 16 outselling even megahit Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

The only Wii U title in the top ten was Super Mario Maker, coming in at #6 for the month - still impressive given its availability only on the lowest-selling console of the generation.

With titles like Star Wars: Battlefront, Halo 5: Guardians, and Fallout 4 around the corner, not to mention the holidays, hardware and software sales are sure to see another surge.
