A number of former high ranking Vigil developers have come together to form a new independent studio.
Joe Madureira, Ryan Stefanelli and others have formed Airship Syndicate, and announced that the studio is already working on a game prototype.
Speaking with Game Informer, Stefanelli said that when Darksiders developer Vigil didn't get picked up in the auction of bankrupt publisher THQ's assets, he join Crytek USA to work on Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age.
"Once we realised Crytek wasn’t going to work, it just seemed like the right time for me to take the leap and do this," said Stefanelli.
After Vigil closed, Madureira went back to producing comic books. "I had a contract with Marvel to finish up a bunch of books," he said. "I did three issues of Inhuman. We both had the idea to start a studio together for a while, but we were both tied up in different projects and couldn’t make it work. We both finished our projects at the same time, and said, 'It’s now or never.'"
Madueira said that genres such as RPG and Adventure "will sort of be at the heart of pretty much everything we do."
Stefanelli said the team hadn't decided whether to seek funding independently or whether to work with a publisher.
"At this point, we are pretty open to whatever is going to get the game made," he said.
The studio is developing a game prototype, but it could be some time before Airship Syndicate is prepared to announce a game, said Stefanelli.
