Microsoft is preparing to announce its acquisition of Minecraft studio Mojang tomorrow, according a new report.
Reuters claimed that the deal will cost Microsoft US$2.5 billion. It added that the acquisition was pursued with the intention of growing Microsoft's mobile game development capability, rather than doubling down on Xbox.
"We don’t view this acquisition as a signal of Microsoft’s intent to double down on Xbox but consider it an attempt to better address mobile on a cross-platform basis," said Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund. "This also appears to be consistent with CEO Satya Nadella’s mobile and cloud strategy.
Additional sources claimed that it was Mojang founder Markus "Notch" Persson who reached out to Microsoft with the proposed deal.
Another source also claimed that Minecraft would continue to be available on all platforms, but that future releases would be exclusive to Microsoft products.
