Steam’s Community Market is now in beta.
The Market is designed to expand the Steam Economy beyond straight-up item trading by allowing players to sell in-game items for Steam Wallet funds.
The beta is starting with Team Fortress 2, and will be expanded to other Steam titles in the New Year.
For the initial launch, the Market will be limited Team Fortress 2 consumables and tools including paints, keys, and crates. Eligible items are marked as “Marketable” in players’ Steam Inventories.
Items purchased are subject a transaction fee to protect against nominal fraud incidents and cover the cost of development of future Steam economy features.
The fee is 15 per cent during the beta period, and “may be increased in the future” according to Valve.
The Steam Wallet Balance restriction of $200 is still in effect.
