John Carmack has announced that id Tech 4, commonly known as the Doom 3 engine, will be released to the public this year.

The announcement was made at QuakeCon, currently running in Dallas, Texas. Carmack added that id parent company Zenimax has been supportive of the move.

Carmack first promised that the id Tech 4 engine would one day be open source at QuakeCon in 2007. Beyond the eponymous game, the Doom 3 engine has been used in titles such as Brink, Wolfenstein, Quake 4 and Prey.

id’s latest engine, Tech 5, will make its public debut with RAGE in the months ahead.
