Viacom has announced that it is selling Rockband developer Harmonix. The news comes via a financial statement that reports write downs at Harmonix cut Viacom’s third-quarter earnings by 59 percent.
No buyer has stepped forward but speculation points to both Electronic Arts and Activision as potential buyers.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, analyst Doug Creutz of Cowen & Company believes Activision is a likely buyer, one that can reunite the Rockband and Guitar Hero franchises:
“We speculated several weeks ago that, given the declines in the music genre, it would make sense to (re)combine the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises, thus we believe Activision Blizzard is a potential buyer,” he said.
EA has yet to make any comment.
