It was confirmed last week that one of features of the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King would be the addition of an achievements system.

An extensive preview can be found here on WoW's official site.

Whilst this news will likely yield a lot of response along the lines of "Meh, so what?", one has to remember that WoW has over ten million subscribers worldwide as of late January 2008, so likely this announcement will be significant and exciting news for many.

Jaded hardcore PC gamers appear to have embraced the concept originally introduced by Microsoft on their Xbox 360 console platform, if the success of similar systems in Valve Software's recent games is any indication. They simply keep adding achievements with every major update to Team Fortress 2, and their older title Day of Defeat: Source was recently revamped with achievements and other TF2-esque features such as a kill cam.

I'd imagine the reception would be more positive in this case, considering that WoW's audience is one of the most broadest imaginable, ranging from the casual to the hardcore.
