To the surprise of precisely no-one, Minecraft was the most-purchased game on Xbox Live Arcade in 2012, according to Microsoft.

The cross-platform boredom simulator sold more than five million copies on XBLA alone in 2012, even though it wasn’t available on the platform until May.

More than a million of those sales happened in a single week.

Platform racer Trials Evolution took second place, and temporarily held the XBLA record for highest grossing day one sales before Mojang’s behemoth arrived a month later. Trials Evolution took a frankly embarrassing three weeks to reach 500,000 sold.

Telltale’s adventure horror The Walking Dead took third place, last year’s winner Pinball FX2 was fourth, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive came in fifth.

Amazingly, 2008 beat-‘em-up Castle Crashers managed sixth on the charts, down from third in 2011.
