This year, Nintendo says it’s all about creating surprise and taking game control to the next level.
It’s also about a new Metroid game for the Wii, a familiar face on a new console, and improved precision with its Wii Motion plus peripheral.
The game that got the biggest cheer from media and fans at Nintendo’s press conference was Metroid: Other M, from Team Ninja, and it indicates that Nintendo isn’t just concentrating on young gamers and families. It wants to keep the hardcore gamer, with games like Dead Space: Extraction and The Conduit.
Apparently Metroid: Other M will reveal a Metroid game unlike any other that gamers have seen before. The trailer looked very promising, with a familiar Metroid feel that will make gamers feel right at home.
Nintendo’s also going big with motion sensing and fitness, with Wii Fit Plus giving gamers a chance to feel the burn even more with 15 new balance games for the balance board, and a chance to customize the work out to suit you. Who knows, you might be able to ditch the gym membership and become your own personal trainer with this one.
With the Wii motion plus, Nintendo is really pushing user interaction, but after seeing what Sony and Microsoft are offering, it seems to be falling behind the eight ball a little bit with the motion plus, which just seems to be an extension of the Wii remote rather than a huge leap forward. Maybe I’ll be wrong.
Nintendo is also continuing with its push of portable gaming, with things like Warioware: DIY where you’ll be able to create your own gameworld then share it with your friends. If you have the patience it could just the thing for budding game designers.
